Funos and Banana Script have reached a partnership agreement and have been selected to join the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator. In the following months, both companies are working together to convert Funos, an online funeral service comparator into a digital broker.

One thing we know for sure: we are all going to die one day.

Without wanting to sound overly pessimistic, it can happen anytime, and as a consequence, we better be prepared.

What does “prepared” mean? It essentially means being financially prepared.

By way of illustration, in Western Europe, a funeral service costs on average €3,000 to €5,000. This includes coffin, burial fees, funeral home services, and more.

And here is where Funos comes along.

What is Funos?

Funos is a Spanish web comparator for funeral services founded and led by Marc Vallhonesta.

How does it work? You first fill out a 1-minute form informing on:

  • Your city
  • The level of urgency of these services
  • Whether you would like cremation or burying
  • Whether you want the service with or without wake
  • The kind of ceremony you want (no ceremony, religious ceremony, secular ceremony)

Once done, you provide your email, and Funos gets back to you to present you with the most budget-friendly option.

The ambition to be more than a comparator

Funos evolves in a highly fragmented market.

In other words, similarly to the retail or dining sector, many small and medium-sized companies compete for market share, with no single entity dominating the industry.

How can Funos stand out and capture a more significant number of clients? The answer lies in moving from being a “simple” funeral services comparator to becoming a comprehensive digital broker.

More concretely, Funos plans to develop a platform that automates the current funeral service benchmark, which is currently done manually.

Users would then be able to select their preferred criteria, view the most relevant options right afterwards, and later select and purchase their favourite option – all of this all by themselves

Besides, the company has international ambitions: Funos wants to make its services available in other countries with the help of multilingual functionalities and pre-planning tools.

However, such ambitions don’t come without serious technical challenges.

Banana Script enters the game

Founded and headed by Carlos Mendez, Banana Script is a Colombian startup with a team of high-level programmers specialised in creating digital MVPs for their clients at lightning speed. “Build fast, test fast, learn fast” is the principle they abide by.

Both companies, Funos and Banana Script, are keen on contributing to the transformation of the deathcare industry, which is traditionally less “digital” than other sectors. For this, they have applied and been selected to enter the 6-month EU-LAC Digital Accelerator programme, and they will  more particularly benefit from the following services:

  • Pilot project design. This service includes the planning and executing a small-scale, testable version of the digital broker platform to validate its functionality, usability, and impact before full-scale implementation.
  • Scaling the solution. Once the pilot project is successfully validated, the Scaling Solution service focuses on expanding the platform’s reach and capabilities, including the development of a long-term strategy to ensure the platform remains competitive and adaptable in a rapidly evolving market.

The goal? Convert Funos in the 360° funeral service digital broker.

How Funos and Banana Script will work together

On the one hand, Funos will provide its knowledge of the market, the strategic vision of the business, and the necessary resources to define the objectives and requirements of the project. They will be responsible for validating key deliverables, such as UI/UX design and system functionalities.

On the other hand, Banana Script will act as the technology arm, leading the design (UX and UI), development, and implementation of the technology.

For Funos, the expected result will allow the company to attract more customers and consolidate itself as an innovative leader in the deathcare industry.

For Banana Script, participating in the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator is key to:

  • Expand its international presence,
  • Strengthen their portfolio with an ambitious project for a European client,
  • Connect with innovation networks and strategic stakeholders.

Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this exciting partnership as they work together to transform the funeral industry.
