In partnership with the Hub Innovación Minera del Perú, the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator hosted two Q&A sessions on September 18th and 27th to connect European startups with Peruvian mining companies. The focus was on finding innovative solutions for the Peruvian mining sector, addressing 14 corporate challenges aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability in operations, fully available on our Matching Platform.

The participating mining companies – Buenaventura, Antamina, Nexa, Hudbay, Poderosa, Minera Bateas, Alpayana, and Vixora – presented their specific challenges across key thematic areas.

The sessions featured experts from various fields of mining technology and allowed attendees to ask questions about the platform (main topics in-kind support, collaborative innovation, intellectual property and confidentiality), the specific challenges, and how they could contribute

The first session held on September 18th introduced challenges covering three thematic areas:

  • Water Resources and Social Engagement: presented by Buenaventura and Minera Bateas, it sought real-time monitoring solutions for bathymetry and water flow to improve management of reservoirs and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Energy and Underground Operations: Buenaventura and Nexa focused on real-time tracking of underground equipment and personnel, as well as preventing geomechanical failures
  • Smart Lighting and Preventive Maintenance: Poderosa and Hudbay centered their challenges around predictive maintenance for air compressors and mining trucks, using machine learning to anticipate breakdowns and reduce downtime.

The second session, held on September 27th expanded into areas of exploration, safety, and further advancements in preventive maintenance, covering four thematic areas:

  • Water Resources and Social Engagement: Hudbay and Buenaventura sought to automate the collection and management of risk data to improve safety protocols and community relations through enhanced transparency and decision-making.
  • Energy and Underground Operations: Minera Bateas and Alpayana focused on monitoring geomechanical failures and improving control over drilling and loading processes, particularly in the use of explosives.
  • Smart Lighting and Preventive Maintenance: led by Alpayana, Antamina, and Vixora, emphasized real-time monitoring of underground equipment and AI-based predictive maintenance systems to foresee tire failures and optimize the performance of large mining trucks.
  • Mineral Exploration and Characterization: presented by Poderosa and Antamina, it sought to improve exploration techniques by using seismic data and better tools to measure mineral hardness during drilling.
