Latina TV is a Peruvian channel struggling to keep its content within its official platforms. The company partnered with Smart Protection, a Spanish startup specialised in fighting piracy. Both firms will benefit from the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator’s acceleration services.
Addressing the Challenge
Not all of us are willing to pay a €9.99 per month subscription to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix or The Sopranos on HBO.
Two possibilities then: you start reading that book you began 2 months ago, or you type “Breaking Bad free streaming” in your search bar.
It’s not 100% legal, but it is fairly easy and hardly detectable.
As Peru’s second-largest channel in terms of viewership, Latina TV is no stranger to the fight against the illegal distribution of its content.
The channel produces native TV shows and programmes such as Tierra Brava and Golden Boy that are regularly hacked and uploaded to illegal platforms.

These platforms divert viewers from the company’s official channels. This has dire consequences:
- Piracy deprives Latina TV of revenue from legitimate subscriptions and advertising.
- Revenue losses hinder Latina TV’s ability to keep investing in high-quality productions.
- Users of illegal platforms expose themselves to malware infections and data breaches. These risks tarnish Latina TV’s reputation as its content is associated with such platforms.
How to end the illegal distribution plague? The EU-LAC Digital Accelerator matched the Peruvian channel with Smart Protection, a Spanish startup.
A Strategic Partnership
Smart Protection’s business can be best summarised by its homepage claim:
“Protect your brand from counterfeits, piracy, and fake websites.”
Its flagship solution Anti-Piracy Software shields live events, movies, books, channels, and more against the risk of being stolen by illegal platforms.
To protect Latina TV’s content, Smart Protection is building a strategy to redirect viewership from illegal sites to the channel’s official platform.
Initiatives include for instance:
- Collaboration with social media: Smart Protection helps establish strategic partnerships with YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and other platforms to enhance the detection and elimination of unauthorised content.
YouTube can take down copyrighted content, it can even detect it before the video is uploaded.
- Advanced semantic search: Smart Protection employs sophisticated semantic search techniques to identify pirated material despite titles or descriptions being altered. Smart Protection is then prepared to execute takedown requests within 24 hours.
- Search engine “de-indexing”: By collaborating with Google and other global search engines, Latina TV can take down links directed to unauthorised content.
Google is compelled to remove illegal content if it receives a legitimate complaint.
The Collaboration Framework
On top of bridging Smart Protection’s expertise with Latina TV’s needs, the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator will deliver several acceleration services:
- The Proof of concept (PoC)
The EU-LAC Digital Accelerator will first put Smart Protection solutions to the test. The proof of concept trial is foundational in a digital world where piracy networks constantly adapt to new technologies and exploit global jurisdictions with weak enforcement. If it passes the test, Smart Protection can scale its services.
- The Customised value creation roadmap
Smart Protection has already identified the piracy patterns for three of Latina TV’s programmes. Following this analysis, the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator will support the partnership in setting up a tailored plan to block future pirating initiatives using the same patterns.
- The Investment readiness service
Once the pilot proves successful for Latina TV’s fight against piracy, the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator will link the partnership with investors. Smart Protection could then raise funding to adapt and grow its solution in other markets.
Expected Results
On platforms such as Dailymotion, Telegram, and TikTok (where most Latina TV’s programmes can be found illicitly!), the partnership wants to take down a significant portion of unauthorised content.
Mechanically, this would redirect viewers to Latina TV’s official platforms, thus improving audience engagement and revenue.
Finally, Latina TV would strengthen the positive perception of its brand. A brand that actively fights against piracy to protect its intellectual property proves its integrity.
